The origins of CIVILTEST PTY LTD stem from the Shire of Flinders Materials Testing Laboratory which was established in 1975 and operated by one of the directors and founder of CIVILTEST PTY LTD, Mr. Steven Buffinton.
CIVILTEST PTY LTD has been trading in its own right since 1987 after incorporation, having severed all financial and management ties with the then Shire of Flinders.
Despite massive growth since 1987, the principals at Civiltest have retained a ‘hands on’ approach, still dealing with the day to day activities of running a geotechnical consultancy, not only carrying out some of the physical testing but also liaising with many of the company’s key clients.
Civiltest is now operated by a Board of Directors, all of whom are active within the business, alongside key managers, who are highly experienced in their respective roles.
When you choose to work with the team at Civiltest you will find a friendly team of people properly focused on satisfying your needs with geotechnical consultancy and materials testing services. We help a broad cross section of Australian businesses, large and small, in the building and construction industry. Just like our clients, we are constantly looking for more effective ways to work by adjusting work methods to the feedback we receive from our clients.
Our staff are very much involved in the appointment of new staff members because we believe that it is very important for all members of the team to work together in a supportive environment for the betterment of our clients.
To ensure that management keeps abreast of current testing methods and standards as well as changing trends in the construction industry, the principals of Civiltest continue to carry out some of the physical testing and liaising with the company’s clients.
Grant Gibbs commenced working with CIVILTEST in 1994 as a Laboratory Technician, later becoming Senior Technician, Laboratory Manager, Operations Manager and is now Managing Director.
Grant's many years of experience both in the field and the laboratory have given him a wide knowledge and understanding of the Geotechnical requirements for our clients. Grant continues to work in a hands on capacity and also liaises closely with CIVILTEST's clients.
Steven established CIVILTEST PTY LTD in 1987 and took over the Shire of Flinders testing laboratory. For many years Steven was the Managing Director of the company before deciding to take a less active role in the day to day running of the company.
Stevens’s vast experience gained over time in the field of Geotechnical Engineering continues to be a valued resource by the board of Civiltest as the growth of Civiltest continues to develop.
Phil joined CIVILTEST in 1996 as a Laboratory Technician, later becoming Senior Technician, Laboratory Manager, Manager of the Mitcham branch and now also a Director of the company.
Phil's knowledge and experience have given him a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of our clients. His vast experience in both field and laboratory testing enables Phil to liaise with clients, offering advice and guidelines for them, achieving their aims for the project.
Michael Bate has been involved with Geotechnical consulting from the age of 18 years when he began as a trainee with Ullman & Nolan, he quickly progressed within that organisation until he took a new position in 1998 with Universal Soil Laboratories (USL). Michael continued to work with USL until Civiltest purchased the USL Company in 2003. Michael Bate continued working at Civiltest as a laboratory and field tester and over the ensuing years he continued to gain further experience in the Geotechnical field while developing a keen understanding in the requirements that clients of Civiltest held as important. As time went, on Michael also displayed his passion and ambition to keep investigating and building on the capabilities that Civiltest could provide to the construction industry.
Due to Michael's can do approach he progressed to become the Laboratory Manager at the Mildura Branch and in more recent times has taken on the dual role of Mildura Branch Manager and National Projects Manager. This duel role was adopted in response to meeting the increasing demands that Civiltest experiences as its services continue being for larger infrastructure projects. These types of projects often require longer term project specific management and Michael’s ability to coordinate larger teams of Technicians to deliver timely and cost effective testing, without sacrificing a quality service, has seen positive feedback to Civiltest from numerous large infrastructure developers and contractors.
